Bars and nightlife in Footscray

A small-bar suburb. Pick a room. Walk home on the lit streets. Check PTV.

Footscray nightlife is rooms, not a club district. Bar Thyme at 227 Barkly, Littlefoot at 223, Bar Josephine at 295, Second Hand Dealer at 297 and Mr West at 106 Nicholson sit in 3011. Misfits at 30 Chambers is the upstairs music room off the mall, old Baby Snakes, house Thu-Sun if the glass agrees. Back Alley Sally's at Level 1, 4 Yewers is the river-precinct warehouse late bar, house Wed-Sat nights upstairs. Hail Lilith at 40A Leeds, Maddern Square, is the vegan bar, house Thursday and Friday from 5pm, Saturday from 12pm, kitchen 5:30pm-8:30pm on the sample card. Hotel Westwood at 28 Napier is listed closed. Moon Dog Wild West at 54 Hopkins is the big Franco Cozzo room. Hop Nation is the river brewery on Whitehall. West Footscray Wines at 578 Barkly is the 3012 bottle and sit. Walk Barkly or Hopkins after dark. Check last trains. The mall is not a shortcut home.

Where are the best bars in Footscray?

Start on Barkly, where the rooms sit close enough to walk and far enough apart to pick a mood. Bar Thyme at 227 Barkly is Howard Stamp's seasonal bistro and wine bar, natural wine, a menu that can change daily, Wednesday to Friday 5pm-11pm, Saturday 12pm-11pm, Sunday 12pm-4pm, closed Monday and Tuesday. Book if you wanted dinner, not just a glass. Four doors along, Littlefoot at 223 Barkly is the cocktail room with a kitchen and beer garden, house Italian-fusion snacks now, kitchen until 9:30pm, Wednesday and Thursday 4pm-11pm, Friday 4pm-1am, Saturday 3pm-1am, Sunday 3pm-11pm, closed Monday and Tuesday. Broadsheet 2016 still says Vietnamese, African and Indian. Cite the shop. Thyme is the wine bistro. Littlefoot has the kitchen. Book the right door. People who mash them have not read a number.

Further along, Bar Josephine at 295 Barkly is a hideout with a front bar, pool room, beer garden and balcony. It is a maze. If you lose someone, check the balcony before you leave. Next door, Second Hand Dealer at 297 Barkly is Aaron Donato's cocktail bar in the old Trouble in Dreams space, Wed-Sun 5pm to 1am, closed Monday and Tuesday, inventive punches, no dinner kitchen. Josephine is the maze. Dealer is the late cocktail. They are neighbours, not twins.

Mr West at 106 Nicholson is two storeys with a bottle shop downstairs, closed Monday. Locals walk pizza in from Slice Shop and treat it as the dining room. They want you to support nearby kitchens. Do not expect a full restaurant menu. Misfits at 30 Chambers is the upstairs music room off the mall, Bell, Poon and Hahipene in the old Baby Snakes lease, house Thursday to Sunday from 5pm if the glass still agrees. Mato billed September 2026 send-offs. Confirm Instagram before you walk. Coco Bananas at 32 Chambers is the coffee and vinyl neighbour, daylight, house closed Monday, not this bar. Back Alley Sally's at Level 1, 4 Yewers is the Get Notorious warehouse that 4 People still trades: upstairs Wed-Sat nights, Slice Girls downstairs, not Slice Shop on Nicholson. Hail Lilith at 40A Leeds, Maddern Square, is the vegan den: house Thursday and Friday 5pm-late, Saturday 12pm-late, sample kitchen 5:30pm-8:30pm, book Instagram or text 0477 915 405. Not Kariton at 50. 8bit at 8 Droop is the burger room, not this bar. Hotel Westwood at 28 Napier, the old Reverence live room, is listed permanently closed on Broadsheet into 2025. Do not send a gig night there off a stale bill. Station Hotel at 59 Napier is the French steak pub, not Westwood, not the station concourse. Victoria Hotel at 43 Victoria Street is the quieter neighbourhood pub, open Monday, Middle Footscray station, Victoria Street not Victoria University. Broadsheet already listed most of these. We add the walk home, because a cocktail list is not a night plan.

Where do I drink in West Footscray?

West Footscray Wines at 1/578 Barkly Street, 3012, is the bottle and sit: courtyard, oysters, share plates, more than 250 bottles to take away, Wednesday to Saturday 3pm to 10pm, closed Sunday to Tuesday. Harley and Rose is pizza next door, Tuesday to Saturday from 5pm, closed Sunday and Monday. This is the 3012 wine night. It is not Josephine. It is not Thyme. West Footscray Station is the platform. Match day changes Barkly. Quiet Tuesday does not, and Tuesday the wine bar is closed anyway.

The Plough Hotel at 333 Barkly sits at the western end of the 3011 spine, a pub pouring since 1868, porterhouse, pizza nights, rooms upstairs if you are making a night of the strip. Closed Monday. People still call it a WeFo pub in conversation. The listing is 3011. Middle Footscray is the short walk. Read the number. You still walk or train further west if you wanted 578. The comparison guide is the postcode. This page is which door you actually meant.

Moon Dog, Hop Nation and picking a scale

Moon Dog Wild West occupies the old Franco Cozzo building at 54 Hopkins Street: three-level tap wall, mechanical bull, arcade, kids play area, function rooms from 15 to 350, open seven days, Monday to Thursday from 3pm, Friday to Sunday from 11:30am. It is the big room, a ranch energy, not a quiet date. Do not drag a first date through Moon Dog because a list said Footscray bars. Hopkins stays the lit walk home. Pho and Nhu Lan are neighbours in daylight. They are not midnight.

Hop Nation at 6/107-109 Whitehall Street is the independent taproom toward the river trail, former winemakers, experimental beers, pizza, Thursday 3pm-9:30pm, Friday and Saturday 12pm-10pm, Sunday 12pm-9pm, closed Monday to Wednesday. Whitehall is the river edge, not central Footscray. Pair it with the trail, not with a station pub crawl that pretends the walk is nothing. Pick a scale. A wine bistro, a cocktail maze, a tap wall and a river brewery are four different nights. Name one.

How should you walk home after drinks?

Barkly or Hopkins. Not Nicholson Mall. Not Paisley as a shortcut. Not the Albert underpass to save three minutes. The safety guide is the street argument. The rule here is shorter: set the rideshare pin on the lit spine even if the venue is a lane off it. Mr West is on Nicholson. Misfits is on Chambers. Back Alley Sally's is on Yewers, off Moreland. Hail Lilith is off Leeds in Maddern Square. Walk out to Barkly or Hopkins before you call the car. Josephine is on Barkly already. Do not improvise an alley because the map shaved a minute.

Joseph Road and the river can feel calmer and darker. Group up. Headphones off. This is still inner Melbourne, not a beach town. Open drug use around the mall is visible. Keep walking. Do not film people. Do not cut through to save a minute. Reddit still flags the plaza and Coles block, and some pub corners if you are alone and already drunk. This is not a scare list. It is the opposite of Broadsheet's venue dump: the night has a geography.

When is the last train from Footscray?

It moves. Check PTV, not a vibe and not a 2019 blog. Weekend Night Network exists. Weeknights end. Southern Cross is about 12 to 15 minutes when the train is running. Missing it is an Uber, not a moral failure. Budget that before the third round. Second Hand Dealer runs to 1am. The train may not. That gap is the night's actual cost.

West Footscray Station is the 3012 platform. Standing at Footscray Station for a WeFo lease is how nights get long. Name the stop on the way out as well as the way in. If you drank at West Footscray Wines, you are already in 3012. If you drank at Thyme, you are on the 3011 spine. The walk between them is a decision, not a shrug.

Can I park for a night out?

Street bays are short and inspected. Plaza overnight is a common fail. Market deck hours end. Pay for a deck that is actually 24 hours, train in, or rideshare. Guest parking at apartments is not your friend's problem to solve at 1am. The parking guide names Irving, Albert and Byron. None of those are a nightclub car park. Plan the exit with the entry.

Moon Dog on Hopkins tempts a "I will just park at the market" idea. The deck window is listed Monday to Saturday 7am-9pm. Your last drink may not match. Train in. That is the adult version of a Footscray night.

How does food sit next to drinks?

Pho and injera run earlier than small bars. Sequence dinner then a room, or accept that Hung Vuong may be closed when you finish Josephine. Littlefoot feeds itself until about 9:30pm. Moon Dog feeds itself. Thyme is a bistro if you booked it as one. Hail Lilith feeds itself on the sample card from 5:30pm to 8:30pm, vegan, then the bar can run later. Mr West wants you to walk pizza in. Hopkins bakeries are morning. Do not expect Nhu Lan at midnight. Station Hotel is the steak if that was the job.

The things to do guide is daylight. This page is after the trail closes down in your head. Same streets. Different jobs. If you are hosting visitors, send them the safety guide and this page together. A cocktail list without a night street is how guests get lost between Josephine and the station.

What do people get wrong about Footscray nightlife?

They expect Brunswick. They expect a safe empty mall. They skip last trains. They mash Moon Dog with a quiet wine bar. They start in 3012 and wonder where Josephine went. They walk Paisley because the map said so. They book Thyme thinking it is Littlefoot. They treat Westwood as open, or as Station Hotel steaks. They treat Victoria Hotel as closed Monday, or as the university.

Pick a room. Walk the spine. Check PTV. That is a good night in the west. Everything else is a listicle with no last service. Name the room, name the walk, name the last train. Then drink.
