What people get wrong
227 Barkly. Not a late club. Book dinner. Saturday lunch is on the house clock. Littlefoot is four doors at 223. Closed Monday and Tuesday. We last walked this on 2026-09-21. Hours move with the week. Checking the shopfront keeps the night easy.
What is Bar Thyme known for?
Bar Thyme is known as the Barkly wine bistro: small-producer bottles, a daily menu, oysters and steak as the constants, a room that wants dinner as much as a glass.
You walk Barkly from the station toward Seddon. 227 is the wine fascia. 223 is Littlefoot, kitchen and garden, Saturday from 3pm. You want the bistro that lunches on Saturday. Inside it is knick-knacks from travel, vintage prints, empty bottles from nights with friends. Stamp opened in 2021 with partner Dijana Necovski in the old House of Injera, Good Food, 15 February 2021, already walking the 35-seat plan. Besha Rodell at The Age, 5 May 2021, sat the polished concrete and banquettes while chef Tommy Hope still ran the pass. That is the origin. Ask who is on the stove tonight. English is the working language. A la carte is always on the house page. Sets are the booking reason.
Phone (03) 9687 8644. Site barthyme.com.au. Email hello@barthyme.com.au. This is not Moon Dog. This is not Josephine's maze at 295. This is not Littlefoot's garden. If you wanted a 1am Barkly sit, Second Hand Dealer is 297. If you wanted a quiet wine plate, this is the door. Matsu at 275 is the 12-seat kaiseki, book months. Ras Dashen at 247 is injera, closed Monday and Tuesday with this door. A Monday wine plan on this block dies here. Tuesday too.
You came because Stamp still treats 227 as a neighbourhood table, and because a Saturday noon hunger belongs here, not four doors down. Good Food later quoted him on market foot traffic. That is colour. The listing is still 227 Barkly, not a stall inside the hall. A 35-seat room fills on a Saturday lunch. Book if the table mattered. A glass at the front is the leftover sitting when dinner is already spoken for.
What should you order at Bar Thyme?
You should order wine from small producers if that is why you booked, then the set if dinner was the sitting.
House menus, fetched 2026-09-21, still sell $70 and $90 sets, and a $70 three-course Sunday lunch. A la carte is always available. Broadsheet still names oysters and a steak as the constants, smoked salmon rillettes, lamb tongue, rock flathead when those plates survive the week. The menu changes daily. Ask. Do not recite a 2024 lamb shoulder as tonight. Broadsheet's leftover Wednesday $50 three-course is the stale price. Cite the shop $70 and $90. Thursday scotch fillet specials on aggregator cards are not the house menu page.
House Negroni if Broadsheet's Melbourne Gin Company, Maidenii, Okar and Bizzarro mix is still on. House spritz if lemon-thyme syrup, dry sherry and sparkling. Lilly Pilly Pie if that cocktail survived the crawl. The list moves. If you wanted Vietnamese-African-Indian plates with a beer garden, Littlefoot. If you wanted pizza and lo-fi on 3012 Barkly, Harley and Rose, closed Sunday and Monday. If you wanted a tap wall, Moon Dog or Hop Nation, different scales.
Stay long enough to taste the plate on its own terms. Eat it here. A sealed steak walking to Hopkins is how a bistro becomes takeaway. Sunday lunch closes at 4pm. Do not treat Sunday like Saturday 11pm. A Saturday 11am arrival is the wrong clock. Littlefoot Saturday starts at 3. Sequence both if you wanted wine then garden.
Hours, payment and queues at Bar Thyme
Quoted hours from the house site: Wednesday to Friday 5pm to 11pm, Saturday 12pm to 11pm, Sunday 12pm to 4pm, Monday and Tuesday closed. Call (03) 9687 8644. Last checked 2026-09-21. Glance at the glass.
Time Out still treats Saturday as a 5pm open. Broadsheet still sells a Wednesday $50 set. We cite the house clock and the house $70 and $90. We put that fight in the hours note. The glass wins.
Book dinner. Walk-in for a glass if the room has it. This is not a club door policy. Holidays shuffle Barkly. Littlefoot keeps a kitchen until 9:30pm on its own card. Pairing both still means two bookings or a walk that checks two doors. Closed days here are Monday and Tuesday. That is the wasted Uber.
How do you get to Bar Thyme in Footscray?
You get to Bar Thyme by walking from Footscray station along Barkly to 227, a 3011 wine bistro, not Littlefoot at 223 and not West Footscray Wines at 578 in 3012.
Read 227. Littlefoot is four doors. Ras Dashen is 247. Matsu is 275. You are on the lit spine, not Nicholson Mall. Barkly meters if you drove. Irving deck is the market. Do not park Paisley for a wine sitting. You do not need West Footscray station.
Walk Barkly or Hopkins home. The mall is the shortcut people skip. Last trains matter more than a second spritz. A Sunday 5pm arrival is how you eat a dark glass after lunch already died. West Footscray Wines is 578 in 3012 if you wanted the other wine courtyard. Different train. Different closed days.
