What is Station Hotel known for?
Station Hotel is known for steaks in a room that looks like a corner pub from the footpath and a French steakhouse once you are in: wood, fleur-de-lis, a full cow diagram of cuts.
You come off Footscray station onto Napier, not Hopkins. 59 is the glass. Inside it is a steak sitting that still wants you to name the cut. Sean Donovan opened it in 2008. The Age Good Food, 17 February 2012, already treated the room as a west-side steakhouse with a pub face. The house site still sells premium locally sourced steaks, classic technique, a seasonal a la carte of French-inspired comfort food. That is marketing until the plate arrives. You sit because a Friday night on Napier still means scotch fillet and a red, and because the courtyard, bar and restaurant still take functions if you booked them. 3AW later called the AVC handoff seamless. You need a table, not a corporate history.
Most steaks on recent cards have been Black Angus, with a Wagyu-Holstein cross as a mainstay. Scotch and eye fillet are the popular orders. Older Broadsheet beef guides listed John Dee flat iron and Sher Wagyu rump cap with pepper or bearnaise. Boards move. Ask the cut, the weight, the feed. That is the point of this menu. A pub that prints a cow diagram is telling you the job. Believe the diagram, then ask tonight's weight.
Phone (03) 9810 0085. Email info@thestationhotel.com.au. Site thestationhotel.com.au. The older 9687 2913 is archive. Use the live number. You sit because the cow diagram is the menu and the wood is the room. A Friday scotch fillet still wants a red and a table you booked. Broadsheet's April 2024 card still named Tim Fowler. Brigades move. Ask who is plating tonight. The courtyard is for the booking you already made. The bar is for the pint after the kitchen dies. You came for the steak sitting, not for a name that sounds like a platform.
What should you order at Station Hotel?
You should order steak. Name the cut and the size. Pepper or bearnaise if you wanted the classic sauces.
The rest of the card exists so someone at the table can eat fish and chips or pappardelle bolognese without leaving. That person is not why you came, but they are why the group stays. Dessert and cheese are listed. The wine list skews bold reds because this is a steakhouse pretending, politely, to still be a pub. Taps have included Furphy, Hawthorn and White Rabbit on Broadsheet's last directory pass. Ask what is pouring. Do not recite a 2014 beer list to a bartender who already changed the handles.
Kitchen hours end before bar hours. A 9:30pm Friday steak is possible on the published kitchen card. A 10:45pm Friday steak is not. Eat it in the room. A steak walking to Hopkins is how you waste a sauce. Pepper or bearnaise is the classic ask. The feed and the weight are the adult questions. If you cannot name those, you are ordering a pub steak and that is still allowed, just say so.
Stay for the last glass if the bar is still open. This is a pub that happens to take meat seriously, not a tasting-menu night. Behave like Napier is the sitting. Functions exist if the courtyard, bar or restaurant is what you actually booked. A surprise party of forty is how you eat nowhere.
Hours, payment and queues at Station Hotel
Quoted bar hours from thestationhotel.com.au: Monday to Thursday 12pm to 10pm, Friday and Saturday 11:30am to 11pm, Sunday 11am to 10pm. Call (03) 9810 0085. Last checked 2026-09-21. Glance at the glass.
Book if you wanted a steak sitting on Friday or Saturday, not a bar stool. Cards are normal. This is an AVC pub, not a cash-only counter. Public holidays and the AFL calendar shuffle west-side pubs. You book Friday because a walk-in steak at eight on Napier is a rumour. The kitchen clock is the one that matters. If you wanted a late pint, the bar still has you. If you wanted a late steak, you already missed it.
The house kitchen card dies earlier. We put that fight, and the Sunday 11pm typo, in the hours note. The phone wins.
How do you get to Station Hotel in Footscray?
You get to Station Hotel by walking to 59 Napier Street from Footscray station, a steak pub on the civic grid, not a concourse bar and not a pin on Raleigh.
Read the number. 59. Napier. You are beside the station, not on it. Napier is the civic grid off the concourse, not a platform shortcut. If you followed the plaza and ended up on Raleigh, you overshot. Footscray Plaza parking is the car answer if you refused the train. The name is a trap only if you refuse to read a street number. 59 is printed on the glass. Kitchen first. Then the bar if you still wanted a glass.
At night Napier is a pub street. Stay on it. Do not cut the mall to save two minutes after a long lunch. The kitchen may already be dead. The bar may not. Plan the steak first. A 10pm arrival is a pint, not a scotch fillet, unless the glass and the phone both said otherwise.
What do people mix up about Station Hotel?
