What is Harley and Rose known for?
Harley and Rose is known as West Footscray's family pizza night: a blondwood dining room and a courtyard of picnic tables on 3012 Barkly, wood oven lit, stereo up, toppings on the cloth, a bottle-o behind the bar that looks like staff only. You walk in off Barkly after five and the room is already doing the job Murphy built it for. This is not a tasting. This is a neighbourhood sitting that happens to have a serious crust.
Josh Murphy cooked at Cumulus Inc, the Builders Arms and Moon Under Water. He opened this door in early 2018 with Rory Cowcher, another Andrew McConnell alum, on the old Ovest pizza site in a circa-1960s bank building. Gourmet Traveller clocked the blond timber and the red neon. Cowcher has since left. Murphy is the name Broadsheet still attaches to the oven. The suburb kept coming for pizza.
You take a picnic table under the festoon lights if the evening is warm and order skin-contact wine or a Garage Project beer from a QR code while the takeaway queue plays handball on the pavement. Good Food, updated October 2025, still scores the room 14/20 and will not let anyone send the blistered, chewy, puffy edges back. Inside, table service is only slightly more formal. Time Out called it Melbourne's Best Casual Dining Restaurant in 2018: kids' menu, natural wine, no sneering. The house still sells that mix: sit down, take away, walk into the bottle shop, bring the family.
The bottle-o is a weird little room behind the bar. You will think you are not allowed in. You are. Lucy Margaux sits next to established producers. What should you order at Harley and Rose?
You should order a woodfired pizza if that is why you walked, then a snack that steals dough space, then a bottle from the room behind the bar. The menu is seasonal. Ask. The crust is the plot. Good Food still writes about those edges as if they were the point of 3012. Opening week, Broadsheet watched them take Baker Bleu advice from Mike Russell on a 48-hour sourdough. Whether that exact mix is still in the tubs is a kitchen question. The blistered rim is not.
Get the pipi pizza if it is on. Broadsheet's opening plate was Goolwa pippies, parsley, garlic and cream. Westsider, February 2024, still named a pippie pie in creamy lemon and parsley, with a little cod roe dip if you wanted somewhere to put the crusts. Good Food still photographs it. Margherita if you wanted the classic: tomato and a lot of basil, buffalo mozzarella on the opening list. Broccoli pizza is on the Good Food card. Diavola if you wanted heat. Westsider warned you might also see pineapple next to San Marzano. Order the shellfish if it is there.
Then spend stomach on snacks so the pizza is not the whole night. Good Food's pro-tip is the 'nduja-stuffed fried olives, salty-spicy enough to steal space you had assigned to dough. Charred garlic flatbread shows up as the wrap for cumin-scented lamb meatballs in sugo. Westsider kept a smoked garlic flatbread with a tin of Cuca anchovies as the spritz companion, and a chicken schnitzel in sage butter if someone at the table was not in a pizza mood. Kids have their own menu. Takeaway is a house product: call, use the button, or stand in that queue with a drink while you wait.
Walk into the bottle-o and pick in person if the list on the table felt like homework. House copy still invites you for a coffee, a beer and a snack. The printed hours start at 5pm. Do not arrive at 3pm on a Tuesday because an old first-look card said 4pm, and do not treat a HappyCow Saturday 2pm start as live.

Walk-in for two. Book if the group is a family occupying the room. Cards are normal. The bottle-o sells wine to take away. It is not a loophole for Sunday dinner. The kitchen is closed those two days. West Footscray Wines next door is closed Sunday to Tuesday, so a Sunday wine plan on this block dies twice.
Public holidays and Whitten Oval match days shuffle Barkly whether a widget says so or not. If the shutter is down, that is the publisher. Do not invent lunch from a 2018 Time Out card.
How do you get to Harley and Rose in West Footscray?
You get to Harley and Rose by getting off at West Footscray station and walking Barkly to 572, a 3012 street number, not a Seddon pin and not a Nicholson Mall pizza search. Migrant Coffee at 3/576 is bagels in the morning. West Footscray Wines at 1/578 is the bottle-and-sit next door along. Aangan at 559 is tandoor the other way. You do not need Footscray station unless you wanted a long Barkly walk past 3011 into 3012.
Street parking on Barkly is short. Whitten Oval match days eat it. The Irving Street deck is the market car park in the other postcode. Do not leave a pie cooling in a 2P while you hunt a space you should have skipped. Walk, or get the train, or take the pizza home.
After a late sitting, stay on lit Barkly back to the station. 3012 residential streets go quiet. This is not Seddon. Do not follow a maps pin that mashed the suburb. Tuesday the pizza door is open and the wine bar next door is not. Sunday neither kitchen on this stretch will feed you pizza.
