What people get wrong

559 Barkly, West Footscray 3012. Weeknights from 5pm, no weekday lunch. Not Pandus at 351 Barkly in 3011 and not Deepak on Nicholson. House, Broadsheet, Westsider and 3AW still sell tandoor. A February 2021 Tripadvisor thread says the oven is gone. Ask if that still matters. We last walked this on 2026-09-20. Hours move with the week. Checking the shopfront keeps the night easy.

What is Aangan known for?

Aangan is known as West Footscray's sit-down Indian dinner: Sumit Malhotra's 2004 courtyard room on Barkly, butter chicken and biryani for families and functions, the kitchen Westsider still calls the heartbeat of this unofficial Little India.

You get off at West Footscray, not Footscray, and walk Barkly until the numbers climb into the 500s. 549 is Thai Angels if it is not Monday or Tuesday. 553 is Busog if it is not Monday. Then 559. The fascia is Indian. The room is bigger than the takeaway it used to be. Broadsheet says aangan means patio in Urdu. Emilia Fuller on 3AW, October 2025, says courtyard. Either way you sit in a space built for a table that will not stay two people. Naan hits the cloth. A mango lassi sweats. Someone at the next table is already arguing about heat. Kids eat here. Wedding parties eat here. The covered patio out the back is the function you actually book.

In 2004 this was two tables, four chairs, two staff. Malhotra told Ann Marie Angebrandt at Westsider, December 2024, that beyond the shop it was darkness, and that people said Footscray was the wrong suburb for an Indian restaurant. He had come from the Hyatt Regency in Delhi, then Crown, then this door, because city Indian rooms were leaning on cans. He still buys tomatoes by the hundred kilo from Footscray Market and changes the sauce when the fruit is sweeter. The menu grew from one page of butter chicken and rogan josh into a twenty-page tour: north tandoori, south coastal curries, Indo-Chinese fried noodles. Broadsheet, last updated 24 August 2021, still sends groups here. 3AW listed rooms in Derrimut, Clayton, Point Cook, Cranbourne, Bundoora, Craigieburn and Hawthorn. This listing is 559. Seat counts fight on the directories: AGFG prints 70, Broadsheet 120, Tripadvisor 160 indoor and outdoor. Count chairs if that is your anxiety. Taste the plate.

What should you order at Aangan?

You should order butter chicken at Aangan if you came for the dish Malhotra still calls one of the best on the board, then share rice and bread so the table actually eats.

You sit. You say spice. Medium on this pass still runs hot, which is the useful fact from Sonia Nair's 2021 sitting, not a dare. The butter chicken is overnight chicken in tomato, garlic, blanched tomatoes, cream if they are doing the Punjabi version Fuller ate for Diwali. Do not apologise for it. Broadsheet already told you not to. Dal makhani if lentils were the point: black lentils sauteed with tomato and onion, nearly two days in the pot. Garlic naan for the sauce. Biryani if rice was the job. Westsider liked it fragrant. Fuller ordered the Hyderabad chicken dum, rice and meat layered, sealed, slow. Cholley tikki to start if you wanted chaat: potato patties, yoghurt, tamarind, onion, coriander. Onion bhaji if you wanted something fried and golden. Garlic naan, raita, papadum if you wanted the table to have work.

Gobi manchurian if Indo-Chinese was the craving: batter, soy, chilli, cauliflower, the plate Nair and Gastrology both landed on. Goat vindaloo if vinegar and heat were the plot. Malai kofta if you wanted paneer and potato dumplings in cream. Vegetarian is not a side salad here. AGFG lists gluten-free and dairy-free. Ask. Kids menu exists. Gajjar ka halwa with pistachio ice cream if you had room. Mango lassi if you did not. Jalebi if you wanted sugar syrup. Gastrology watched Malhotra pipe it in 2014, dining courtesy of the house. Confirm the board still has it.

If you wanted dosa as the meal, walk to 604. Broadsheet still prints dosa fillings on this menu. That is not Dosa Hut. Pandus at 351 is 3011, BYO, chef Prashant, after the market. Deepak is plaza-side Nicholson when the errand was already there.

Hours, payment and queues at Aangan

Quoted hours from AGFG, matching the house West Footscray block this directory last used: Monday to Friday 5pm to 10:30pm, Saturday lunch 12:30pm to 3:30pm then dinner 5pm to 10:30pm, Sunday lunch 12pm to 3:30pm then dinner 5pm to 10:30pm. Weekday lunch is not this kitchen. Call (03) 9689 4175. Last checked 2026-09-20.

Walk-in for two. Broadsheet still ticks reservations, function hire and takeaway. Cards are normal. Licensed, BYO wine only, corkage is a number you ask, not a personality. Take-away and delivery exist on the brand site. Match days on Barkly change the wait. A Saturday sitting for twelve is not a vibe you invent at the door.

Tripadvisor and Broadsheet still disagree with that clock. The phone wins. Monday night Indian still works here from 5pm when Busog at 553 is shut.

How do you get to Aangan in West Footscray?

You get to Aangan by getting off at West Footscray station and walking Barkly to 559, a 3012 street number, not 351.

Thai Angels is 549. Busog is 553. Harley and Rose is 572 the other way, wood oven, closed Sunday and Monday. You can eat biryani then walk for pizza if the clocks agree. You should still name the kitchen. You do not need Footscray station unless you wanted a long Barkly walk past 3011 into 3012.

Street parking is short. Match days eat it. Irving deck is the market car park in 3011. After dark, lit Barkly back to the station. Do not cut into residential side streets because the biryani made you ambitious.

What do people mix up about Aangan?

They pin Pandus at 351 Barkly in 3011, or they wanted Deepak on Nicholson, and they treat Barkly Indian as one door.

  • 559 Barkly Street, West Footscray VIC 3012 only. Phone (03) 9689 4175.
  • Mon-Fri from 5pm. Weekend lunch and dinner. No weekday lunch.
  • Not Pandus at 351 Barkly, Footscray 3011. BYO. Chef Prashant. Dosa and Indo-Chinese.
  • Not Deepak Indian at 2/56 Nicholson Street, plaza-side. Confirm that glass is still Indian.
  • Not Dosa Hut at 604 Barkly, West Footscray 3012. That is the fermented crepe shop.
