What people get wrong

Not a live market. Fire 13 Dec 2016. 63-67 Nicholson is empty as of 2025 petitions. Green Valley at 9/63-67 is the grocer that remains. Car park is 47 Byron via Utility Lane. We last walked this on 2026-09-21. Hours move with the week. Checking the shopfront keeps the night easy.

What is Little Saigon known for?

Little Saigon is known as the indoor Asian market that burned: sugarcane juice, live crabs, cheap meat, the hall Time Out told you to follow a nanna through, and now a fenced 63-67 Nicholson site that still does not sell lychees.

You walk Hopkins to the 80 pin, or Nicholson to 63-67, and you get a leftover strip and a hole, not a stall. Time Out, 2012, still called it overlooked behind Hopkins. Westsider in 2015 used the same word. The fire on 13 December 2016, an electrical fault above a cool room in leftover Age copy, ended the stalls. Produce sat rotting for weeks. The Age, Star Weekly and The Westsider all treated the land as vacant after that: demolition talk, apartment permits, then the 2025 park petition. Vietnamese and English both worked here. They still work at Irving and at Green Valley. This door does not owe you mint.

Westsider, 1 May 2025, put the site at about 5,000 square metres, gutted in 2016, still derelict, with a petition over 700 signatures asking Maribyrnong Council for parkland. Leonie Bessant, 38 years in Footscray, told that piece it was the most hardcore Asian market in Melbourne, basically her corner shop, and she wanted a market back, not grass. Thomas Foreman organised the petition. Mayor Pradeep Tiwari talked scarce land. That is a planning fight. It is not a grocery list. Stand at the fence long enough to smell that there is no fish ice left, then turn around.

You came because a friend said meet at Little Saigon, or because a maps widget still printed daily retail hours, and because a visitor who parked Byron with a coriander letter is how a Saturday dies. Three answers live on this block: the empty site, Green Valley if the glass is lit, and the Byron car park. Only one still sells groceries. Ask which one before you walk.

What should you buy at Little Saigon now?

You should buy nothing from the old stalls. They are gone. Shop Irving Tuesday to Saturday, or Green Valley on Nicholson if that shopfront is lit, or plaza Coles on Sunday.

The Byron car park is a parking product. Ace Parking lists Sunday to Wednesday 5am-11pm, Thursday to Saturday 5am-midnight, first two hours free on their card. Confirm the boom. Height 2.2m. A ticket is not coriander.

Do not hunt To's 2 Bread inside a ruin. To's Bakery is 122 Hopkins, a different counter. Co Thu Quan reopened at Shop 11-12, 10 Droop. Nhu Lan at 116 Hopkins still bakes. This ruin is not that baguette and not that bowl.

If a directory still prints phone 9687 3505, that number belonged to the old market. Do not treat it as a stall. Last checked 2026-09-21. Trust the fence over a widget.

Hours and which door at Little Saigon

There are no live market hours, because the indoor market is not trading. Last checked 2026-09-21.

Time Out's old Sun-Thu 9am-6pm, Fri 9am-9pm, Sat 9am-7pm card is how people still waste a trip. Directories that print daily retail hours are why first-timers stand at a fence and then review the suburb.

Car park: 47 Byron, Utility Lane. Not Irving. Not Albert. Sunday the Irving hall is closed. This burned market does not save you. Coles does. Green Valley might. Confirm Nicholson, not a 2012 clock.

The 2025 petition and the 2024 Age empty-sites piece both treat the land as vacant. Demolition, apartment permits, then parkland arguments. That is the listing now: a hole, a memory, a car park. Do not invent a 2026 produce hall because a pin still says Little Saigon. Last checked 2026-09-21. Trust the fence.

How do you get to Little Saigon?

Walk Hopkins to the 80 pin, or Nicholson to 63-67 if you wanted to see the empty site. Footscray station is close. The mall is not the shortcut.

If you meant the car park, Utility Lane off Byron. If you meant groceries, turn around for Irving. If you meant Green Valley, Shop 9 on the same old block, and confirm the glass before you write a list.

After dark this empty block is not a reason to linger. Walk Barkly or Hopkins. Do not make Nicholson Mall the commute with bags you will not fill here.

If you already parked Irving for the live hall, this is a walk, not a second market. Do not mash the three complexes and then review coriander that never had a chance. The 80 Hopkins pin, the 63-67 hole, and Shop 9 are three different jobs on one leftover block. Name the one you meant before you leave the station.

What do people mix up about Little Saigon?

They treat this pin as Footscray Market, or they send a grocery trip to a leftover 2012 Time Out clock, or they call Green Valley the hall that burned in 2016.

  • 80 Hopkins is the old Hopkins face. The market was 63-67 Nicholson / Byron.
  • Burned 13 December 2016. Site still empty in 2025 reporting.
  • Green Valley at 9/63-67 Nicholson is the remaining grocer.
  • Irving hall is the live market, closed Sunday and Monday.
  • Byron car park still exists. That is parking, not shopping.
