What people get wrong

Shop 11-12, 10 Droop, Westville. Walk-ins. Time Out 10:30 versus Good Food 11am. Not a Hopkins pho house. We last walked this on 2026-09-21. Hours move with the week. Checking the shopfront keeps the night easy.

What is Co Thu Quan known for?

Co Thu Quan is known for that crab soup: a thick, steamy southern bowl that clings to finger-width tapioca noodles and coats crab, prawns and mushroom before you have decided whether to talk.

You peel off Footscray station toward the plaza and Droop, not Hopkins. 10 is Westville Central. Shop 11-12 is the Cô Thư Quán fascia, yellow canopy, black glass. Inside it is simple and bright. Communal dark wood. Tissue boxes and chopsticks already on the table. Decorative shutters. Eddie Jim, shooting for Good Food, still photographs that room as if the work was the sitting, not the mural. Food comes fast. You sit because the steam is already doing the talking, and because a weekday lunch on Droop still feels like someone put a Saigon street counter inside a shopfront and left the tissue box as the only ceremony.

Good Food says the specialty sits about halfway through an illustrated menu, and that this door faces little competition even on a busy Vietnamese strip. That is the critic talking about rarity, not a dare to invent a tasting menu. Pete Dillon still has cha ca la vong on the card, turmeric fish from Hanoi, a reminder that this kitchen will feed you beyond soup if you stay. You came because the broth is thick enough to coat a noodle you can feel, and because a 12/20 in October 2025 still means the west kept a crab specialist after the market years ended.

Vietnamese and English both work. Phone (03) 9689 1451 is on the fascia. Facebook is the house page. There is no website we trust. You need a bowl, not a founding myth.

What should you order at Co Thu Quan?

You should order banh canh cua if you came for the soup Good Food still names, then decide whether the table still wants a northern bowl or a rice-paper snack while the first one cools.

The southern soup is the identity. Thick broth. Tapioca noodles as wide as a finger. Crab, prawns, mushroom. The card says it clings. Eat it here, while it is still steam and not a photograph. A takeaway lid is how a steamy bowl becomes a homework assignment on Droop, and then you will tell someone the noodles were glue. Ask what it costs tonight. Do not recite a 2018 ticket to the person holding the ladle.

Canh bun if you wanted the northern water-spinach crab noodle soup City Lane already watched other tables order in 2018: chicken broth, freshwater crab paste, thick rice noodles, a pork and crab meatball, Vietnamese pork sausage, fried tofu, tomato, water spinach, a cube of congealed pork blood, tamarind and shrimp paste on the side. It is an ecosystem in a bowl. Pho is on the menu if you cannot help yourself. City Lane still ordered pho bo and called the broth light and aromatic. That is allowed. It is not why this directory prints the door.

Banh trang cuon if you wanted the small fried wrap: dried shrimp, quail egg, jerky, shredded squid, green mango, mint, shrimp salt, shallot, scallion oil, Kewpie. Banh trang tron if Time Out still has the bag salad as a signature. Cha ca la vong if the Hanoi fish on Dillon's plate looked like your sitting. Che Thai or a custard apple smoothie if you wanted sweet. Stay long enough to taste the crab on its own terms.

Hours, payment and queues at Co Thu Quan

Quoted hours from Time Out, 23 September 2019: Sunday to Thursday 10:30am to 9pm, Friday and Saturday 10:30am to 9:30pm. Call (03) 9689 1451. Last checked 2026-09-21. Glance at the glass.

Walk-in. Good Food still tags the room walk-ins only and lists takeaway. Cards are normal on this strip. Cash still works. There is no booking widget hiding in a Facebook footer that will hold a Saturday night table. Come when you are hungry for soup, not when an aggregator said 11am and you missed the half hour Time Out still prints.

Directories still fight that open. We put the fight in the hours note. The fascia wins if a public holiday is sitting on the week.

How do you get to Co Thu Quan in Footscray?

You get to Co Thu Quan by walking from Footscray station toward the plaza, then onto Droop, to Shop 11-12 at 10, a street room in Westville Central, not a Hopkins pho house and not a stall in a hall that burned.

Read the canopy. Yellow. Black glass. Cô Thư Quán. You are on Droop. If you are hunting an aisle you have not arrived. Albert Street is the plaza park if you drove. Irving is the market deck, the wrong job unless you already bought herbs. Tram 82 and the station buses hit the same block. You do not need a reservation. You need to read the shop number before the hunger invents a different street.

At night this is still a main run. Leave toward the plaza or Barkly. Hopkins is the lit walk if you stacked a roll first. This kitchen dies on the Time Out clock, not at last drinks. Plan the soup, then the walk.

What do people mix up about Co Thu Quan?

They send the pin to a burned Nicholson market and miss the Droop room that still cooks the crab.
