What is Roti Road known for?
Roti Road is known for tissue-thin roti canai on a tin platter, and for a Barkly dining room that used to stretch the dough in front of you until the fire took the sitting.
You walk Barkly from the station toward Seddon. 189-193 is the larger Malaysian fascia, past the station grid, before Thyme and Littlefoot start arguing about wine. The glass is the listing. If it is dark, that is the honest night. Do not invent a backup two doors along and call it roti canai. Bar Thyme is a wine room. Ras Dashen is injera. Sushi Takezo is Japanese. None of them will fry your roti.
Jess Ho at Time Out, 3 September 2019, already named the house as a Malaysian-Chinese family room: roti canai with sambal, curry and dahl, then satay, dumplings, curry puffs, char kway teow. Broadsheet, updated 15 January 2024, still sold the show, chefs stretching dough, a tin platter, nasi lemak, slow chicken curry, Peranakan seafood laksa, weekend yum cha, ice kacang, teh tarik, a Milo Dinosaur if the table wanted childhood in a glass. Licensed. Notable gluten-free and vegetarian lines. That is the room people miss. It is not a Highpoint food-court stall with a 3011 pin taped on.
House copy still pitches this door as the wider vegan and low-gluten card, more seats, BYO plus licensed drinks only at Footscray, functions up to about 150, catering if they come to you. AGFG used to flag roti canai, nasi lemak with curry chicken, beef rendang. Treat those as the dishes this glass was built for. Do not treat a 2019 price or a 2025 Broadsheet Sunday widget as tonight. You came to stand at 189-193 and decide whether the roti room has a pulse. The painted Highpoint line on the same domain is a different suburb. Leave it there.
What should you order at Roti Road?
You should not order a live table at 189-193 until the glass agrees. If the Footscray room has reopened, start with roti canai and a curry, then decide whether the sitting is laksa or nasi lemak.
The roti is the name. Ho watched it arrive with sambal, curry sauce and dahl. Broadsheet watched it come on a tin platter. That is a share plate, not a single pancake you eat in the doorway and leave. If the kitchen is live, ask what survived the closure. Do not quote a 2025 specials board as tonight. Clay-pot herbal chicken and prawn laksa still sit on the house home page as specials photography. Ask. Prices move.
If the door is still dark, do not substitute Highpoint in your head and call it Footscray. Highpoint is Level 1, 200 Rosamond Road, Maribyrnong VIC 3032. Same brand. Different stall. Different postcode. This directory is 3011. Sending someone to a shopping centre because Barkly burned is honest only if you name Maribyrnong. Do not send them to a random Barkly kitchen asking for roti canai. That is how you waste a night and invent a second Malaysian room that does not exist.
Vegan and low-gluten lines were a real part of the Footscray pitch, not a footnote. Ask when it is trading. Ice kacang if the table still wanted shaved ice after the heat. Teh tarik if you wanted pulled tea. Stay long enough to taste the roti on its own terms if the fire ever lets this door open. Eat it here. A folded parcel walking to Hopkins is how you waste a flake. The tin platter is the sitting. You came for this glass.

Read the number. 189-193. Buses 216 and 219 along Barkly drop closer than the train if you were coming from Sunshine and did not want the walk. MelbourneMeal still prints Barkly Street and Louis Street as the alight. Street parking on Barkly is timed. Cross Street paid parking is the backup the same card already names. You do not need a car to confirm a dark glass. You need the number.
At night this stretch is a bar and restaurant spine. That does not help you if 189-193 is boarded. Do not stand on the pavement arguing with a closed door. Check rotiroad.com.au/footscray/ from home. Monday through Sunday this kitchen is dark on the house line we fetched. Plan the roti only after the glass says yes. A Highpoint pin is how you miss Footscray on purpose.
