Papelon.
Hurtado pabellon. Orange diner on Hopkins, Sunday still cooks.
Location
What people get wrong
Shop 190 at 81 Hopkins, market edge, not a stall inside the Irving hall. Not a taco bar. Market Sunday close does not apply. Time Out hours on this card. Broadsheet and EatClub still fight the clock. We last walked this on 2026-09-20. Hours move with the week. Checking the shopfront keeps the night easy.
What is Papelon known for?
Papelon is known as Hopkins Street's Venezuelan diner: Reveka Hurtado's orange room on the market edge, pabellon as the identity platter, arepas as the bread you hold, and a following that started in a ghost kitchen.
You come off Footscray station and Hopkins is already doing the work. The market building is the neighbour, trolleys and ice on Irving when the hall is open, a locked shutter on Sunday. Shop 190 is on the street. Westsider caught the mural: Barriguita Llena Contento, a full belly makes a happy heart, painted up the side of the market so you cannot pretend you missed the door. Inside it is orange and turquoise. Flags. Woven lanterns. Latin tunes. Good Food watched tradies in hi-vis, families on enormous plates, students playing dominoes and Jenga. Time Out says kids are welcome and Saturday nights can grow singers. You came because the west finally had a Venezuelan room that stayed open after the hall died.
Hurtado's name is on the door because the catering already had a following. Dani Valent at Good Food, May 2024, wrote the harder version: journalism student, Venezuela in disarray, Chile as harbour, Australia in 2020 to study English, pandemic, empanadas for rent, a dark kitchen, then this diner. Broadsheet dates the Chile years from 2016, family restaurants that grew into five venues employing later arrivals. You are sitting in the brick version of a WhatsApp rumour. The name is papelon, unrefined cane sugar, the same word as the street drink Valent tasted and the syrup on the tequenos. You need a plate, not the etymology.
The suburb uses 190 when the errand was already Hopkins, when Sunday still wanted shredded beef and the market pho was locked, when the other Latin table in walking distance was Argentine asado on Nicholson. Phone 0426 837 005. Site papelonmelbourne.com. Instagram @papelonmelbourne if live music or an arepa night is why you came.
What should you order at Papelon?
You should order pabellon if you came for the house platter, then an arepa you eat with your hands, then decide whether the table still wants fried plantain.
Pabellon is the national plate: shredded beef, rice, black beans, sweet fried plantain. Valent called it native, Spanish and African in one sitting. You eat it because this is the room that exists to cook it. The arepa is cornmeal, split like a pocket, not the flat Colombian disc Valent had only known before this door. Reina pepiada if chicken and avocado were the craving, the curvy queen named for a 1950s Miss World if you wanted the story. Catira if pulled chicken and cheese. Empanadas if you were snacking: cornmeal, fried, chicken or beef or vegetables, herby green sauce on the side. Tequenos if the table needed fried cheese sticks dunked in cane-sugar syrup. Hurtado told Valent that if you run out, it is a bad party. Believe her.
Patacon if the table can share: fried plantain stacked with pulled skirt steak, salad, cheese and salsa, or the later Good Food Guide version with spiced chicken. You will be full and you will keep going. Cachapa if you wanted the sweetcorn pancake stuffed with birria-style beef and too much cheese. Arepa e huevo if Time Out sold you the Colombian street move, a fried corn parcel with a jammy egg. Quesillo if you wanted flan with a cafe con leche on a quiet weekday. Lulo juice with chilli salt if you wanted the drink Melbourne does not otherwise give you. Polar or Club Colombia if beer was the job.
The house site still sells tacos. Good Food Guide still prints a Monday unlimited-taco sitting with a drink. That is a promo. It is not why Hurtado opened an orange diner to prove Latin food is more than tacos. Wednesday to Friday, Time Out's $25 lunch still bundles soup, a main, a juice and dessert if you work nearby. Sancocho if a stew with green plantain and cassava is on. Ask. Do not recite a 2024 first look to the person holding the plate.
Hours, payment and queues at Papelon
Quoted hours from Time Out, 28 March 2026: Monday and Tuesday 5pm to 9:30pm, Wednesday to Friday 12pm to 9:30pm, Saturday 10am to 9:30pm, Sunday 10am to 9pm. Call 0426 837 005. Last checked 2026-09-20.
Walk-in. Broadsheet still tags the directory card no reservations. Cards are normal. The Square site takes pickup and delivery if you were never going to sit. Polar beer exists. This is a licensed diner, not a dry market stool. Weekend mornings from 10am on that Time Out card are real. The market next door being locked on Sunday does not close this kitchen. That is the whole point of a street number.
Broadsheet, EatClub and AGFG still fight that clock. We are citing Time Out. The phone wins if a group is coming.
How do you get to Papelon in Footscray?
You get to Papelon by walking Hopkins from Footscray station to 81 and finding shop 190 on the street, not inside the Irving hall.
Nhu Lan is further along at 116 if the errand was also a banh mi. Huu Huu Thanh is the pho stall inside the hall, closed Sunday and Monday with the market. You can eat arepas on a Sunday here. You cannot eat that pho that day. Caminito La Boca is 205-207 Nicholson, Argentine asado, a different street and a different country. Do not treat Latin as one pin.
Irving deck if you already came for the market. Hopkins meters if you only came for arepas. Do not park Albert Street and call it next door. At night, Hopkins back to the station. Barkly is the other lit spine. Paisley is spices in daylight, not this walk. Do not cut Nicholson Mall because dinner made you ambitious.
