What is Ollie's Deli known for?
Ollie's is known for a short sandwich list that sells hard enough to make a line on Barkly: green signage, a black-tiled shop, pastrami that photographs, a BFC that still hits, Industry Beans in the cup.
You come off Footscray station onto Barkly. 158 is the block before the night bars. Shop 7 is the deli. Inside it is a grab-and-go counter with a few stools, not a two-hour brunch room. You stand because the board is the menu, and because a Saturday at 2:30pm is how you learn the phrase until sold out. Urban List still puts a $3 side of pickles or potato crisps next to the sandwich. Ask what is actually in the fridge. The sandwich is the job. Industry Beans is the coffee Urban List still names in 2026. You should order the pastrami if you wanted the Reuben argument, then decide whether the sitting still wants fried chicken or a melt.
Urban List writes thick-cut rye, sauerkraut, American cheese and the house secret sauce. Time Out's supplied photo is that sandwich cut on the diagonal, chips, a pickle, two caneles on the paper. The BFC is buttermilk fried chicken, panko, pickles, lettuce and house sauce on a milk bun. Urban List misspells it BCF once. The shop and Time Out write BFC. Instagram in 2024 printed $16 for that bun. Delivery apps print more. Do not treat a DoorDash number as the till. Do not invent a dinner price for a lunch bun.
The truffle melt is the vegetarian Urban List still flags. Maggie Lam's 2022 visit named mozzarella, Swiss, Gruyere, mushroom salsa and truffle oil, and said an 11:30am arrival beat the 45-minute waits of opening week. Good Food's 2021 six also included a brekkie bagel, an Italian, and a tuna melt. The list is short on purpose. Ask what has already sold. AGFG claims vegan options and ten seats. Confirm the board. This is still mostly standing.
Eat it on Barkly or on a stool. A melt in a hot car while you do the market is how you ruin cheese. Stay long enough to taste the pickle on its own terms. If you wanted a tray, phone. If you wanted one BFC, join the line.
