What people get wrong
588 Barkly, 3012. Home page closed Tuesday. Contact used to print Tuesday 5pm. Not Pasa Ya on Irving. Phone (03) 9078 4892. We last walked this on 2026-09-21. Hours move with the week. Checking the shopfront keeps the night easy.
What is Magic Momo Kafe known for?
Magic Momo is known as West Footscray's Nepali sit-down: steamed momo, a mixed platter, Newari khaja, a khana set, thukpa, chow mein, lamb sekuwa, a room that looks small from Barkly and then keeps going.
You get off at West Footscray, not Footscray. Walk Barkly to 588. Dosa Hut is 604. Busog is 553. Delhicuts is hair. Three jobs. Three doors. The fascia is Magic Momo. Inside it is momo first. House copy still sells spicy wai wai sandheko, piro aalu ko achar, choila, street snacks, a Newari khaja set at $26.95 with choila, chiura, bara, anda, aalu achar, bhatmaas, saag and bodi. That is a Kathmandu snack plate, not a butter chicken default.
Kenny and Bennie at Consider the Sauce caught the opening week: fried chicken momo, vegetable dumplings that ate like soft samosas, a tub of seasoned pork mince at the pass, old phone 9972 2616. Lauren at Footscray Food Blog, 6 June 2013, named Ravi and the steamed, fried or simmered options. A later CTS comment, 28 October 2013, said the menu and fit-out had gone hardcore Nepalese. Believe the later kitchen. The burger and BLT card is history. You came for the dumpling and the beaten rice.
Phone (03) 9078 4892. Site magicmomokafe.com.au. The SSL on that host has been stale in the past. The shop is still 588. Nepali and English both work. Regulars order momo without a speech. First-timers should still say spice. Whitten Oval traffic makes this block louder on match days. Arrive earlier than your hunger if the Bulldogs are home. Pasa Ya on Irving will not save a 3012 evening. Different train stop. Different closed day.
What should you order at Magic Momo Kafe?
You should order momo if that is why you walked, then decide whether the table still wants a Newari plate or a noodle bowl once the dumpling is gone.
Steam if you wanted the dumpling clean. Fried or chilli if you wanted crunch. The Magic Momo platter stacks steam, fried and chilli if the table could not decide. House still prices Mo:Mo around $16.95. Thukpa if the night was soup. Chow mein if you wanted the Nepali noodle stir-fry, which is not a Chinese takeaway ghost. Lamb sekuwa if barbecue was the job. Choila set if you already knew beaten rice was the starch.
Newari khaja set if you wanted the identity plate. Nepali khana set if you wanted rice, daal and a curry. Puri tarkari if you wanted fried bread with veg. Wai wai sandheko is spicy instant-noodle salad, a snack that looks like a joke until you taste the chilli and sesame. Do not order this kitchen as if it were Dosa Hut. Dosa lives at 604. Do not order it as if it were Pasa Ya's Irving Newari khaja. That room is closed Monday. This home page is closed Tuesday. Two Nepali doors, two closed days, two postcodes.
Stay long enough to taste the momo on its own terms. Eat it here. A sealed bag walking to Whitten Oval is how a dumpling dies. Match-day Barkly is a different wait. You will not get a quiet Tuesday dinner if the home page is telling the truth and the door is dark.
Hours, payment and queues at Magic Momo Kafe
Quoted hours from the home page: Wednesday to Monday 12pm to 10pm, Tuesday closed. Call (03) 9078 4892. Last checked 2026-09-21. Glance at the glass.
Older contact copy still printed Tuesday 5pm to 10pm. The contact URL returned 500 when we fetched it. We are citing both. We put that fight in the hours note. The glass wins. Do not build a Tuesday night on a leftover contact line.
Walk-in. Cards are normal on this Barkly stretch. Cash still works. Reservations exist on the house site if a group needed a table. Match-day Barkly is a different wait. If you are pairing this with Dosa Hut, check both glasses. If you wanted Irving Nepali instead, Pasa Ya is closed Monday. Do not bounce between 3011 and 3012 hoping one kitchen covers the missed closed day.
How do you get to Magic Momo Kafe in West Footscray?
You get to Magic Momo Kafe by getting off at West Footscray station, not Footscray, then walking Barkly to 588, a 3012 Nepali room, not Pasa Ya on Irving and not Dosa Hut at 604.
Read 588. Whitten Oval, Dosa Hut and Delhicuts share this run. You do not need the market deck. You need the 3012 train. Street parking on Barkly is short. Match days eat the kerb. If you drove from 3011, you drove the length of Barkly on purpose. That is a plan, not a shortcut.
After a late sitting, stay on lit Barkly back to the station. Side streets west of here go quiet fast. This is not Irving. This is not Hopkins. A twenty-minute walk from Footscray station is how you arrive hungry and angry and call the wrong kitchen Indian.
