Whose country is this?

Maribyrnong City Council states that the area around Footscray was home to the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong peoples of the Kulin Nation. Maribyrnong is an anglicised form of Mirring-gnay-bir-nong, often translated as "I can hear a ringtail possum". The junction of the Maribyrnong and Yarra was a meeting place. Sacred sites are recorded along the river.

That is the opposite of the competitor line that the Wurundjeri called the area "Kinnear's Rope". Kinnears is a later factory. Use the Historical Society at 66 Napier Street and council heritage pages, not a templated town page.

Why is it called Footscray?

A punt went in on the Saltwater River, now the Maribyrnong, in 1839. A village reserve was surveyed in 1848 at the river junction and named after Foots Cray, Kent. Victorian Places and the Encyclopedia of Melbourne both give that etymology. Maidstone, the suburb to the north, is also a Kent name.

Charles Grimes reached the river in 1803. The municipality was created in 1859. The working river is the Maribyrnong. Goods, waste and later factories used that waterway, not a Yarra high street.

What did industry actually look like?

Quarries, meatworks, foundries and processing plants made Footscray an industrial west. Angliss meatworks sat on the river flats that are now Seelaf Square and Angliss Neighbourhood House. Kinnears Rope Works at 124-188 Ballarat Road is on the Victorian Heritage Register: a rope walk and factory complex associated with George Kinnear, operating through the twentieth century. It is industrial heritage, not a creation story.

Footscray Park, the town hall on Napier, and the railway station are the civic leftovers of that boom. The Western Ring Road is a later metropolitan freeway. It is not how the suburb began.

Who arrived after the factories?

Post-war European migrants, then Vietnamese refugees from the 1970s, then Horn of Africa and later South Asian households, remade Hopkins, Irving, Nicholson and Barkly. Victoria University grew out of the Footscray Institute of Technology. The football club is now the Western Bulldogs at Mission Whitten Oval in West Footscray.

The living suburb is those streets plus 3011 versus 3012. Gentrification is real and uneven. It did not flatten the market, the river arts precinct, or the settlement desks.
